Waves or shadows appear on walls (ringing)

Ringing is machine vibration printed directly onto the part. There is no magic setting: it comes down to rigidity, moving mass and acceleration.

What the failure looks like

Smooth waves repeat and fade out after every corner or hole. Best seen under raking light.

Causes, most likely first

  1. 01

    High acceleration and jerk

Every sharp direction change excites the frame.

  2. 02

    Loose belts

    They introduce slack and bounce.

  3. 03

    Unrigid or poorly supported frame

Wobbly tables, loose screws, uneven feet.

  4. 04

    Excessive moving mass

    Heavy hotends on bedslinger machines.

Step-by-step fix

1. Print a ringing test

A cube with a notch on each face; you will see the wave straight away.

2. Lower the acceleration

Try 2000 → 1500 → 1000 mm/s². If it improves, find a balance with print time.

3. Lower the jerk

8-10 mm/s in Marlin; in Klipper use square corner velocity 4-5 mm/s.

4. Tension belts and tighten the frame

Check all frame profile and corner screws.

5. Place the printer on a solid surface

A concrete slab or a thick wooden board, not a folding table.

6. Enable input shaping

If your firmware supports it (Klipper, Marlin 2.x with accelerometer). This allows high speed without waves.

So it doesn't happen again

  • Do not copy speed profiles from machines that are more rigid than yours.
  • Re-measure input shaping if you change the hotend or add weight to the carriage.

Can it be removed by sanding?

Yes, but it requires manual work for every part. It is worth tuning the machine properly once.

What if it isn't worth your time?

Sometimes the part is more urgent than the learning curve. We're a workshop in Viladecavalls: send us the file and we'll print it with the right material and settings.
